Martial Arts

Martial arts have been practised for fitness, self defence and in competition for many years. There are many different forms of martial arts, and fitness centres and gyms have been pivotal in the role of allowing people to learn and practice martial arts. With the large spaces and fitness facilities available to most commercial gyms, they are a popular venue for many forms of martial arts training.

Many fitness centres employ staff to train classes various forms of martial arts. Most gyms now have a range of self defence classes, and these can be incorporated into aerobics style classes such as boxercise or tae bo. These contemporary classes are as much for the fitness and fun aspect as for self defence.

However, many fitness centres also have instructors and independent contractors teaching martial arts in a more traditional matter. They train students to a variety of goals from serious martial arts use through to competition training. This can include body conditioning, technique and working with a variety of techniques.

Martial arts that have gained popularity in Australia include:
